Susanna Harrington, alias Shrimathi Susanna, is one of the few Westerners to have studied Bharatanatyam, a beautiful and spiritual classical dance from Southern India. She is unique in that she expresses Christian, rather than the traditional Hindu themes associated with this style. Through the poetic language of dance, she shares her devotion, captivating her audiences with this spiritual and dynamic dance form.

Susanna and a group of 28 young Bharatanatyam dancers from Naatya East, performed three 'East Meets West' sacred dances during Choral Evensong and the Mothering Sunday service at Chelmsford Cathedral in Essex UK.

It was an extraordinary, unique and hugely valued occasion, when dancers from one faith and culture had the grace and courage to come to the heart of another faith and culture to contribute to and augment its worship. The English Choral Tradition met Classical Indian music and dance, and the resulting symmetry astonished and moved everyone who witnessed it. The event proved very important, not only for Chelmsford Cathedral's dialogue and outreach with different faith communities in Essex, and to showcase the diversity, openness and welcome that should define what a Cathedral is for.
